While Your Grandma Makes Lasagna, Dorothea Taylor Makes Beats

'Have you ever found yourself making assumptions about someone'

July 13, 2020

"Drummers come in all ages, sizes, shapes, ethnicities. And regardless of how good you are, how old you are, we're all still part of the drumming family," says Dorothea Taylor, a grandmother and drum instructor from Michigan, who got her start in drum and bugle corps at the age of 13.

Now when she's not instructing students, playing the organ for her church group or laying the beats for her band Badlander, Dorothea enjoys posting drum covers of some of her favorite songs. Think Slipknot, Disturbed, Paramore -- you know, grandparent music -- and she's starting to get noticed.

It's a lesson in expectations for all of us -- let your guard down a little and you never know what surprises your neighbors may have in store.

"Have you ever found yourself making assumptions about someone before you’ve met them? What about before seeing them play drums? … Dorothea Taylor has heard it all when it comes to judging a book by its cover."

For more of Dorothea's drumming magic, she's all over social media as you can see, but be sure to follow her on Instagram for the latest updates.
